How to Identify Your IBC Outlet Connection

Choosing the correct IBC adaptor starts with identifying the connection on the outlet valve. IBC outlets can look very similar while using different thread diameters, pitches or coupling profiles. Use the guide below to narrow down the connection before ordering.

Important: “2 inch” on its own is not enough to identify an IBC outlet. Check the complete connection profile, thread diameter and pitch where applicable.

Compare your IBC outlet visually

Use the profile and approximate outside diameter together. The illustrations below show four common outlet styles, including the corrected 100 mm S100X8 example.

CPP guide comparing common IBC outlet connections including S60X6, 2 inch Camlock, S100X8 and fine 2 inch pipe thread profiles
Measure the outside of the connection, then compare the thread or coupling profile. Diameter alone is not enough to identify an outlet.

Start with the outlet profile

With the valve closed and safe to inspect, remove the protective cap and look at the connection where your adaptor or hose will attach.

How to measure a threaded outlet

  1. Measure the outside diameter. Measure across the highest points of the external thread. Do not measure the opening through the middle.
  2. Measure the thread pitch. Measure the distance from one thread peak to the next. For a coarse thread, measuring across several gaps and dividing by the number of gaps can improve accuracy.
  3. Check the profile. A coarse buttress thread looks very different from a fine pipe thread, even when the overall diameter is similar.
  4. Check markings. Valve mouldings or caps can sometimes carry a size or thread reference, but measurements should still be confirmed.

Tip: a vernier calliper is the best tool for measuring the outside diameter. A ruler can be used as a rough check, but small differences matter.

Quick comparison

Connection Typical appearance Useful measurement CPP range
S60X6 Coarse buttress thread Approx. 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch Shop S60X6 fittings
2″ NPS Fine straight pipe thread Approx. 60.3 mm OD, 11.5 TPI Shop 2″ NPS fittings
2″ Camlock Male cam-and-groove profile Identify by coupling profile and locking groove Shop 2″ Camlock fittings
S100X8 Large coarse buttress thread Approx. 100 mm OD, 8 mm pitch Shop S100X8 fittings

These are common IBC outlet connections, but they are not the only types in use. If your outlet does not match one of these, browse our other IBC fittings or contact CPP for help.

Choose what you need on the other end

Once you have identified the IBC outlet, the second part of the fitting is the connection to your hose, pipework or dispensing equipment. Common options include:

  • Hose tails to suit the hose internal diameter.
  • BSPP or NPT threaded adaptors.
  • Camlock connections for removable hose assemblies.
  • Taps, nozzles and off-loading fittings.
  • Reducers and converters between different connection systems.

When asking for help, describe both ends of the connection where possible — for example, S60X6 female to 1″ hose tail.

Check the seal and application

The correct thread is only one part of the selection. Check that the adaptor has the correct sealing face and seal arrangement for the valve, and that the fitting and seal materials are suitable for the liquid, temperature and operating pressure.

Do not force a fitting that does not engage correctly. A fitting that starts tightly, rocks on the thread or will not seat properly may be the wrong connection even if the nominal size appears correct.

Still not sure?

CPP can help identify unusual or unfamiliar IBC outlets. For the quickest answer, send:

  • A clear photograph looking directly at the outlet.
  • A side photograph showing the thread or Camlock profile.
  • The outside thread diameter and pitch, if you can measure them.
  • Any markings moulded or printed on the valve.
  • A description of the hose or equipment you want to connect.

1 / Tank connection

I know my connection

Choose the outlet on your tank. Use the identifier beneath each picture to check it if needed.

Thread identifier — S60X6

Quick identification check

S60X6

IBC valve with an exposed S60X6 coarse buttress-thread outlet

Check for a coarse external buttress thread with a nominal outside diameter of 60 mm (2.362″) and a pitch of 6 mm (0.236″). Measure over the thread crests, not the hole. The matching CPP adaptor has an S60X6 female tank connection.

Inspect only when the container is safe. Confirm the complete profile and sealing face; a picture or nominal dimension alone is not a guarantee of fit. Inch measurements in brackets are rounded conversions.

Thread identifier — 2″ NPS

Quick identification check

2″ NPS

IBC valve with an exposed 2 inch NPS male outlet

Check that the valve has a dedicated 2″ NPS male straight-thread outlet and a suitable gasket sealing face. NPS, NPT and BSP must not be identified from a similar appearance alone. Check the valve specification or ask CPP when uncertain.

Inspect only when the container is safe. Confirm the complete profile and sealing face; a picture or nominal dimension alone is not a guarantee of fit. Inch measurements in brackets are rounded conversions.

Connection identifier — 2″ Camlock

Quick identification check

2″ Camlock

IBC valve with an exposed 2 inch male Camlock outlet and locking groove

Look for a male Camlock profile with a locking groove. Confirm the 2″ coupling size and sealing face from the valve specification or CPP size chart. A short thread on the nose may be for a protective cap; it does not by itself identify a pipe connection.

Inspect only when the container is safe. Confirm the complete profile and sealing face; a picture or nominal dimension alone is not a guarantee of fit. Inch measurements in brackets are rounded conversions.

Thread identifier — S100X8

Quick identification check

S100X8

IBC valve with an exposed S100X8 large coarse buttress-thread outlet

Check for a large coarse external buttress thread with a nominal outside diameter of 100 mm (3.937″) and a pitch of 8 mm (0.315″). A 3″ or DN80 valve marking alone does not confirm S100X8. The matching CPP adaptor has an S100X8 female tank connection.

Inspect only when the container is safe. Confirm the complete profile and sealing face; a picture or nominal dimension alone is not a guarantee of fit. Inch measurements in brackets are rounded conversions.
